Mummy, Ma, Mammy, Mathair
20 March 2022
Whether it’s your own mother, your grandmother, your aunt, your sister, your friend or someone who stepped up to the mark and gave you support when you needed it most, Mothers day is the day to show them some love.

Here in Ireland, women have always been incredibly revered. The role of ‘Mother’ has always been held in great esteem (rightfully so!) and our Irish folklore consistently celebrates the power of the mother. In Irish mythology, mothers were viewed as powerful warriors, with great power and strength, with the means to move mountains and conquer kingdoms. Sounds pretty accurate, if you ask us!
Our ancestors always valued the wisdom and magic of women on this land and things haven’t changed one bit. From our pagan ancestors who celebrated fertility and the power of the mother, to our modern world, where our grandmother's stories are treasured like gold, Ireland holds a great respect for mothers and we couldn’t be more proud.
Here at Irish Homelands, we understand that Mother’s Day brings with it a plethora of emotion. It brings happiness for some, sadness for others, and mixed emotions for many.
And so, today, we wanted to do two things. Firstly, we want to celebrate, appreciate and show some love to the incredible mothers and mother-figures in our lives. And secondly, we want to send love and warmth to those who have lost their mothers, those who yearn to be mothers and cannot, those who are estranged from their mothers and all those who find this day a difficult one.
We’re all in this together and we get it.
With that in mind, we thought we’d take a moment to show some appreciation for the mother that links us all. The mother that supported our ancestors. The mother that feeds the Irish people. The mother who’s beauty leaves us breathless and awe-struck, and the mother whose children stretch far and wide across the globe.
Mother Ireland.
With her rolling hills, mesmerising landscapes and deep, fascinating history, she is the matriarch of matriarchs, and there’s no better day than today to share your appreciation for her.
Whether you’ve lived in Ireland all of your life, lived overseas for some time or maybe your ancestors left her shores many years ago, the whole truth is that Ireland never leaves you. It’s in your bones, it’s in your blood and it will always remain within you.
Truly, that’s why everyone at Irish Homelands loves their work so much. We understand that your townland, your landscape and your country keeps the stories, memories and people you once knew fully alive, even when time has moved on. Your townland is always there to comfort you, and remind you of where you came from. Your townland holds you up when you’re struggling, and your townland dances with you when you’re full of joy. That’s why we feel so passionate about our personalised townland prints. They’re more than just a decoration. They’re a conversation starter. They remind you of the place that brought you up and they encourage incredible conversations and sharing of stories that otherwise may be lost.
And so, we wanted to take the opportunity today to say Happy Mother’s Day to all the women that have done a phenomenal job of supporting and raising the generations below them. And Happy Mother’s Day to our Ireland, who raised us all.
